Hopefully a Day of Rest
But no! We were awakened at 6:30am by this! (hope you can hear the video and not just see it)
Windows banging, the cat hiding, trees bending low, followed by a heavy rain! The power went out. We had left the bathroom window and other windows in the house ajar since it was quite warm when we went to bed and the clothes drying in the bathroom needed ventilation. The huge wind and rain storm blew the window wide open and all the knicks knacks went flying into the bathtub below with CRASH!
After the storm settled down and the power came back on, I went back to bed until 9:30. But Melodie was wide awake and stayed up. I had heard the cat wailing in the middle of the night and ignored him but she got up to investigate and ended up with only 3 hours of sleep last night. I don't know how she keeps going.
We waited for the sky to clear and went into Krakow to pick up our train tickets for our overnight sleeper car to Prague on the 22nd. We had forgotten to get them on one of our other trips into town and they would only be held until the 10th so we'd had better get a move on!
We are very lucky to run into helpful Poles when ever we're about to do something stupid. I figured I could park in a taxi area since we would only be there for 5 minutes or less. The man who had parked LEGALLY behind us was returning to his car and warned us of the high ticket we could get for parking there so he told me to move my car into his spot when he left. Don't need anything more to go wrong. Of course, those are the things you remember, right? Melodie picked up another ticket for the tram for each of us so we would have a 20 minute biletwy (ticket) there and another for the return trip.
We looked at a map and discussed the location of the train station when we got off at the Dworek Gowny stop and opted to go with Rick Steves' directions and map and, again, we weren't disappointed!
Going to the Krakow Main Train station, we got in line for international tickets and ended up with an attendant who spoke NO English. I tried to explain about our tickets but she only understood Prague and 2 tickets and gave me a price. I tried to explain again and show her an email that I had from polrail.pl where she went to get someone who spoke more English that she. That woman explained that they didn't have the tickets since we had ordered them online through Polrail.pl which is a private company. They had sent them through a courier and they were being held at the local post office.
As we walked back to the square and post, we HAD to try an obwarzanki. These large rolls are sold on almost ever corner by street vendors and come in cheese, poppy seed, sweet, and onion. We chose a cheese one to share.
On our way to the post (poczta), we came across a Pepsi taste test being held in the station square. It appeared the people standing in line had to give their email address or something that they entered on an iPad. They had a blind taste test of two different glasses and then got a pair of sunglasses afterwards.
After claiming our tickets, we took the tram back to our tram stop in Rybitwy. After gasing up the car, we shopped at the Lidl (grocery) and came home to cook our dinner and share a bottle of wine. Actually, I had one glass. We made one of Val's eggs in a ring of red pepper and topped it with a slice of ham and had a side salad with oil and vinegar.
Blogging and off to bed so we can hit the road in the morning by 11:00 for Wroclaw and Poznan where I will meet relatives I never knew I had!
