Trip to Downtown Krakow - July 2, 2015
Frustrated by not having any phone reception, despite having made all the necessary arrangements and adding a Global Plan for $40 more, we still don't have phone or voice mail reception. Our internet and text messages only work when we are on wifi here or somewhere we can grab it free. After an hour on the live chat, Melodie's iPhone5c is all good but I was told that my iPhone4 was too old. Why couldn't they have told me that in the first place. So I canceled my extra charge and will yet another nasty phone call or message to get the refund for the time it was in service.
And where is my bag?#$%^&*! Brushing my teeth with my finger and wearing the same clothes for the 3rd day is not fun. Every time I turn around, we could use something that is IN MY BAG!

We drove the Yaris and parked it at the Bedronka for the day which is across the street from the tram station. We hopped the #20 to Dworek Glowny (Dvorek Gwuv-knee). Our first excursion was a success! Try some of these stops on for size! Melodie is getting pretty good at it!
Remember that an i sounds long e; gl=yee; Ł or ł = w; y at end of word is short e; w=v; ę in się sounds shem but at end = shou like "shout"; e at end of a word = eh; j=y; and przepraszam = pr silent so: zhe-prah-zham. Try some of these:
Tak - yes
Nie - no
do widzenia - goodbye
dzuękuję - thank you
proszę - please
Without paying much attention, we darted across the street where no pedestrian cross was available to get to the TI for some maps and later also discovered that the path to the Main Square was one that went UNDER the streets with shops down there too. Be sure to go to Poland with a zloty or two in your pocket because you must pay to use the toaleta.
Equivalent to $.50
Miod i Wino (Honey & Wine) - our dinner spot.
Pierogie
Melodie's "Glutton" Meal of fried sheep's cheese, olives and prunes wrapped in bacon, and chutney.
|
Two all-beef patties, special sauce...you know the rest!
|
Pączek
A taste of Poland for your enjoyment.
Prices of shoes, entertainers on the street corners, and paintings of nudes right there with Pope John Paul II.
At dinner we were able to access wifi and Monika had my suitcase delivered to Paulina's mother's house! We gotta get back soon so I can get the bag. All signs lead to somewhere...
Great sign!
Do you know where you're going?
Getting home late with sunset creeping up, I got directions from Monika on how to get to my suitcase. I wrote them, repeated them to Monika, and we rushed out. This 5 minute drive found us returning back at the house 2 hours later. We misunderstand THE FIRST TURN direction and ended up searching for quite a while to no avail. Before coming back and letting Monika pick up the luggage and bring it to us, I decided to try another tack. BAD MISTAKE! We ended up on the motorway with no exits for miles. Got off but couldn't find a ramp in the opposite direction. We got lost twice and wandered aimlessly around the outskirts of Krakow. Finding a gas station, we accosted a good looking paramedic and asked he spoke English. "A little", he said and was able to give great directions to get home which Melodie wrote down. We were only a few miles from our place!
Monika had borrowed keys from the mother and put the bag in the apartment.Thank goodness! She was so worried about our getting lost "adventure" that she came over with her sister to check on us.
So happy to have my "stuff" but WAIT! There's a tag on my suitcase! It says Olson!!! They had canceled Melodie's boarding pass in Washington D.C. stating she wouldn't be able to make the flight and then pulled MY BAG from ever leaving D.C.!!! Sometimes they just shouldn't be allowed to think!
Well, another late night. Off to bed at 1am and the alarm is set for 6a. We have reservations for an 8am entry into Auschwitz in the morning.
